FAQ

How do I use the rub?

Rub or sprinkle on your favorite meat, you can use it right away, or for the best results let it marinate from an hour up to three days in a sealed container.

Why Should You Avoid MSG?

At Drake’s Meat Rubs, all of our products are MSG-free. Many people have heard that MSG is something that should be avoided, but why?

MSG (monosodium glutamate) is a form of the naturally-occurring amino acid glutamate, and it is commonly used as a food additive to intensify the taste of food. This flavor enhancer, originally extracted from seaweeds and used in Asian cuisines, has now become a common find in many food products.

Over the years, studies have consistently shown that MSG can lead to a number of immediate and long term health concerns. It is toxic to your neural functions and can disrupt your endocrine system. MSG can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue, and habitual usage can increase your risks for obesity, ADHD, memory loss, and other pancreatic and psychological disorders.

As unpleasant as these symptoms are, it gets worse – MSG may also injure the brain. According to Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills by Dr. Russell Blaylock, MSG is an excitotoxin – a substance that over-stimulates cells throughout the body, particularly in the brain, triggering severe damage and cell death. As a result, MSG may play a role in serious neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Though the FDA does not prohibit the use the MSG in food products, the discovery of these medical hazards has made the public become increasingly more cautious of this substance.

Unfortunately, MSG is found in many of the foods we frequently consume. Some of the most heavily MSG-laden foods include processed chicken and sausage products, Parmesan cheese, soups, fish sauces, ranch dressing, dipping sauces, deli meats, and canned goods. There’s even MSG in such innocent-sounding ingredients as natural flavorings, bouillon, stock, and broth.

At Drake’s Meat Rubs, we recognize that our customers want spices that are both flavorful and healthy – that’s why we don’t add MSG to any of our products!

When Do I use the Rub?

We all know that Drake’s meat rubs are delicious, but they’re also versatile! Drake’s meat rubs can be used on meat that is grilled, fried, baked, or broiled – and they can be used on fish, pork, chicken, beef, lamb, or game. You can also use Drake’s meat rubs to season stews, soups, casseroles, and many other types of foods. With Drake’s broad selection of different meat rubs and the variety of meats and cooking methods available to you, the possibilities for creating a tasty and exciting meal are nearly endless!

Simple Salmon: Squeeze lime juice over thawed salmon fillet, then sprinkle your choice of Drake’s meat rub over salmon (you can easily adjust the intensity of flavor – sprinkle the meat rub lightly for a subtler taste, or coat fillet evenly with the meat rub for a bolder flavor). Broil salmon for 8-9 minutes, serve and enjoy!

For meat dishes, evenly cover your piece of meat with the Drake’s meat rub of your choice, and gently massage in using your fingertips. Wrap with plastic wrap or close in a sandwich bag and place in the refrigerator for a few hours, or even overnight.

This will let the herbs and spices penetrate the meat and infuse it with delicious flavors.

An hour or so before cooking, remove from the refrigerator to allow it to return to room temperature. Then you can broil, grill, bake, or fry the meat as you choose.

Try your favorite Drake’s meat rub spice blend in different dishes – you’ll be amazed at how it brings out the various flavors of chicken, fish, pork, or red meat. You can even use Drake’s meat rubs in vegetarian dishes – try it on a grilled Portobello mushroom for a lively and healthy meal!

Who is Drake's Meat Rubs?
Al and Angie along with their four children: Al 21, Corina 20, Judah 6, and Tirzah 4, live in the Tri-Cities, WA where they manufacture Drake’s Meat Rubs.

Drake’s Meat Rubs has been a thriving family owned business since 2002. Al has always enjoyed cooking a variety of different meats and making his own rubs. Al and his friend Aaron would get together from time-to-time and collaborate on different ideas for seasonings. Talk of starting a business never actually came into play until Al was motivated by his daughter. That little bit of motivation has gone a long ways since 2002. Drake’s Meat Rubs carry over 17 different seasonings. They have a little bit of something for everyone! Hot, sweet, jerked and even some specialty blends for those with allergies!

What Is a Meat Rub?

Meat rubs have been gaining in popularity among professional chefs and at-home cooks alike, but what exactly is a meat rub? A simple way to add tantalizing flavor to meat, meat rubs are mixtures of herbs and spices that are sprinkled on meats before cooking. With a dry rub from Drake’s Meat Rubs, you can add a new and exciting level to your cooking with very little effort.

Dry rubs have a number of advantages: they are less likely to burn, they are very easy to work with, the cook can add more or less of the rub to cater to his or her personal tastes, and they can be stored for a longer period of time. Best of all, meat rubs can be used on steak, chicken, fish – almost anything! As one of our favorite sayings goes, if it had legs or fins, you can use a meat rub on it!

To use a meat rub, sprinkle or rub the meat generously with the dry meat rub, making sure to cover the meat evenly. You can grill, bake, or broil it immediately, or you can wait a bit to let the flavors of the meat rub develop. (Once you add the rub to your meat, it can sit in your refrigerator in a sealed container for up to three days – this will allow more time for the flavors to fully penetrate the meat.)

At Drake’s Meat Rubs, we offer many different flavor combinations including BBQ Spice Blend, Blackened Fish Spice, Blackened Rib Spice, Cajun Seasoning, Italian Herb Blend, Jalapeno Garlic Peppercorn, Jalapeno Mesquite Seasoning Salt, Jamaican Jerk Seasoning, Mesquite Seasoning Salt, Pleasant Poultry, Roasted Garlic Peppercorn, Salmon Rub Supreme, Southwest Mesquite Marinade, and Steak Seasoning Supreme. We have gluten-free, low-salt, and sugar-free options, and all of our products are MSG-free. With a Drake’s meat rub, you can create a delightful dish that will be sure to satisfy every appetite.
